The International Corrections and Prisons Association organised its 18th Conference and AGM in Bucharest with the support of The National Administration of Penitentiaries – Romania. The event took place between 23 and 28 October 2016 in Radisson Blu Hotel, in the heart of the Romanian capital. The theme of the conference was “Correctional Leadership – Engaging Hearts and Minds”.
450 Attendees from more 75 countries opened their hearts and engaged their minds for collaboration in the name of better professional corrections. More than 100 speakers shared their knowledge and expertise with the participants. 68 workshops and 21 roundtables were organised during the conference – some of the brightest minds were solving issues, discussing ideas and planning next steps for future projects.

Important part of the event was the Pre-Conference Seminar for local corrections professionals, sponsored and organised by the International Association for Correctional and Forensic Psychology (IACFP). Over 80 professionals attended the seminar.

Delegates who attended the Annual General Meeting heard the reports on ICPA’s activities, financial health and future plans. Important decisions were taken during the meeting – three Founding Statements were ratified – “Management of Aged and Frail Offenders in Custody”, “Management of Women Offenders in Custody” and “Occupational Health and Safety of Staff”. The International Corrections and Prisons Association paid tribute to all the professionals and authorities, who had achieved significant results in their work, by organising the Correctional Excellence Awards Gala and Ceremony in the magnificent Palace of Parliament in Bucharest.

The feedback from the attendees was expectedly good but we have to say that it even exceeded our expectations. Everyone is now looking forward to the 19th ICPA AGM and Conference which will be held in London, United Kingdom. The theme for the next conference is “Innovation in Rehabilitation: Building Better Futures” between 22 and 27 October 2017. Our host will be the National Offender Management Service – NOMS. We hope to see you there!
