5th Edition of the Advancing Corrections Journal & Call for Papers: Issue #6

The International Corrections and Prisons Association is pleased to announce the fifth issue of the journal “Advancing Corrections”.

This 5th Edition is devoted to an exploration of evidence-informed ways to improve practice. The papers we are publishing come from around the world – Scotland, Australia, Singapore, Ireland, the United States, the Netherlands, the UK, Canada, Argentina and Norway. To begin the Edition, we feature a special contribution from professor Fergus McNeill. The next 4 Research Articles present data supporting change in practice in a number of particular ways, followed by two papers from Singapore that are more specialized but yet important. The Views and Reviews section of this Edition includes papers that provoke some important new thinking about issues we should be addressing in corrections. As usual, the final section of each Edition of Advancing Corrections tries to present one particular country’s Practice Innovation in Corrections. In this issue, Marianne Vollan, the Director General of the Norwegian Correctional Service and a consistently inspiring correctional leader, gives us a cogent presentation of how her system tries to realize their underlying principle of ‘normality’.

Advancing Corrections Journal Edition #6 – Call for Papers Has Been Extended to 15 August 2018!

Theme of the Issue #6: ‘Innovation in Education: Voices from the Front Line.’

The Journal invites submission of papers that can be digested and appreciated by practitioners, managers, policy-makers and other correctional professionals. Authors are welcomed to submit papers for one of three sections of the Journal. Featured Research Articles should be more research oriented and scholarly, including the usual practice of referencing the relevant literature. Another section called Views and Reviews welcomes shorter and thoughtful discussions of a particularly relevant or emerging issue/topic. And finally, a section we are calling Practice Innovation in Corrections would like to profile what is going on in a given agency/jurisdiction that is especially innovative and can be of interest broadly to others.

The themes for the 6th Edition of Advancing Corrections is ‘Innovation in Education: Voices from the Front Line.’ The benefits of corrections education are well known. Education can significantly reduce recidivism rates. By developing higher cognitive skills in prisoners, it can promote pro-social behaviours promoting dynamic security. Further, it can positively impact prison culture helping to overcome the lack of social and cultural capital that is characteristic of most prison populations. The ‘voices’ can be those of prison administrations, officers or teachers that design and deliver the programs, the academics who evaluate them or it could be the prisoner voice, the participant in those interventions. The programs may be anything from numeracy and literacy programs, vocational education programs or even higher education or postgraduate programs. Innovation may take many forms from the application of virtual reality or other technology in prison or community settings to innovative curricula, and new cohort or work release programs.
