Friends and colleagues of former ICPA Board Member, James Ryan were saddened to hear that, after his battle with a long illness, James passed away in May 2020. James had a distinguished career with the military before moving on to working in Australian Corrections, serving in both New South Wales Corrective Services and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). His last position was Commissioner of Corrections in the Australian Capital Territories prior to his retirement in 2011. During his tenure James oversaw several major changes in justice services which included the administration of the ageing Belconnen Remand Centre, and the establishment of the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC) as the ACT’s first prison and the first in Australia to be built expressly as a human rights compliant correctional institution.
James’ passion for the advancement of professional corrections and his support of ICPA’s vision was evident during his tenure as a Board Member of ICPA, a position which he held from 2006-2010, and through his work he significantly enhanced channels for sharing Australian practice and experiences with the international community. He was presented the ICPA Outstanding Correctional Employee Award during the Correctional Excellence Awards Programme in Belgium 2010.
He will be sadly missed by many across our Global Corrections Community.
