The Sixth United Nations International Corrections in Peacekeeping Conference will take place in Livingstone, Zambia from 17 -19 May 2016. The two-and a-half day event will be held on the theme “Strengthening Public Safety, Peace and Security in Post-Conflict Settings” and is expected to bring together about 120 corrections experts comprising practitioners and partners from the United Nations system, other international organizations, heads and representatives of national prisons services, including from post-conflict countries.
The conference will provide a forum to review developments, activities, opportunities and challenges in the field of corrections in post-conflict countries, as well as to explore practical steps to support prison authorities. With emphasis on the role of corrections in post-conflict, discussions will focus on the management of high-risk prisoners, including in low-resource environments; preventing the spread of violent extremism; balancing security and dignity in prisons; implementation of the Mandela Rules and developing toolkits on the Bangkok Rules; use of non-lethal force; tackling prison overcrowding; and managing prisoners from opposing factions.
