Health through Walls (HtW) in partnership with the Mozambiquan Prison Service has introduced two technological initiatives into the correctional system in 2023. These technologies include the use of handheld devices enabled with the "Health Matters Application" for real time wireless data capture and analysis, and the introduction of Artificial Intelligence for the detection and treatment of lung health conditions (e.g. TB).
HtW and SERNAP have introduced the new technologies, trained staff, and assessed more than 6,000 detainees.
This resulted in health system strengthening in a low resource environment is occurring due to the use of the new technologies.
In conculsion, the use of new technologies in healthcare settings in places of detention enables staff to better meet the needs of the men, women, and children in their care. The relatively cheap cost of deployment has significant public health benefits for staff, detainees, and the broader community.
