Rethinking Corrections: A Restorative Approach (PID127)

4.15pm – 5pm EDT, 24 October 2022 ‐ 45 mins

Parallel Workshops

The International Institute of Restorative Practices posits that human beings are happier, more cooperative and productive, and more likely to make positive changes in their behavior when those in positions of authority do things with them, rather than to them or for them. A restorative approach to discipline focuses on restoring the relationship between an offender and his/her community through collaboration and rehabilitation of mindset and behavior.

A major flaw of traditional (punitive) disciplinary practices is its focus on only behavior, which is a symptom – but not the root of – the issues that manifest as problematic behavior. Pairing a cognitive behavioral approach with restorative practices, we can more effectively and compassionately address underlying self-defeating thinking patterns. In addressing the root – not merely the symptoms – of the issue, lasting change is not only possible, but inevitable.
