Parallel Workshops

States across the country, from Maine to Michigan to North Dakota to Pennsylvania, have piloted innovative programs within departments of corrections to reduce violence, reduce recidivism, and connect incarcerated people with jobs post release. This workshop highlights statewide reforms in Maine Department of Corrections and other key jurisdictions. It also spotlights findings from the Brennan Center’s original research as well as from partnerships across the United States that focus on key outcomes, including safety and return to custody. It includes a discussion of strengths, challenges, and lessons learned from prison reforms, as well as how to sustain changes in the long term, beyond correctional directors’ tenures.
