The wellbeing of individuals within correctional environments is fundamentally tied to the health of the systems and staff that support them. The ICPA Healthcare Network explores innovative, evidence-informed healthcare initiatives that promote holistic wellbeing across correctional settings. Drawing on international collaboration and diverse practitioner expertise, we will highlight emerging models of care that address the physical, mental, and emotional health needs of both incarcerated individuals and correctional staff.
Key themes include trauma-informed care, peer-led support models, strategies to reduce burnout among healthcare and correctional personnel, and the integration of community-based health services pre- and post-release. Through a systems lens, we will examine how corrections agencies can embed health equity and staff wellbeing into organizational culture, policies, and daily operations. By presenting case studies and cross-jurisdictional insights, this session will offer actionable pathways for fostering resilient systems that prioritize wellbeing - ultimately benefiting correctional institutions and the wider communities they serve.
