Towards Freedom – Using Probationary Liberty Under Supervision to Reduce Reoffending and Enhance Desistance (PID112)

1.30pm – 2pm EDT, 26 October 2023 ‐ 30 mins

Workshop Session

Probationary liberty under supervision (PLUS) is an alternative to the last six months of imprisonment and can be defined as a community correction. PLUS is part of the gradual release proceeding from prisons and is a humane correctional alternative for incarceration. It is cost-effective and at the same time recognising the needs, risks and human rights of people that have committed a crime. It invites professionals to interagency co-operation and to work together with the convicted person.

The research on experiences of persons that have served probationary liberty under supervision showed that the desistance theory is relevant, and it recognised all the reintegration and rehabilitation factors. Research findings indicated that agency, importance of social bonds, finding your place in the mist of change, and substance abuse treatment and rehabilitation are included in the execution of PLUS.
