Elevated rates of psychiatric disorders appear to be relatively universal across prison systems. From Uganda to the United States, from India to Norway, people entering prisons are more likely than others to suffer from psychiatric disorders. Emerging science suggests that the epidemiology of psychiatric disorders across cultures reflects substantial similarity, specifically around the role of childhood trauma and adversity.
This presentation reviews international literature on rates of psychiatric disorders in prisons and rates of epidemiological correlates. The session is organized around purpose-built design, including study of those who enter prisons, the services they require, and spaces necessary to deliver care. Case studies from around the world examine how psychiatric disorders can be treated in minimalist settings, such as those found in low- and middle-income countries, and how wealthier nations are setting new standards for treatment of prisoners.
