Design Principles for Prison Landscapes: Security, Biodiversity and Wellbeing (PID086)

2.30pm – 3pm GMT+03:00, 28 October 2025 ‐ 30 mins

Thematic Workshop Sessions

Green spaces in prisons are widely recognised both to help address sustainability aspirations, and to support wellbeing, but security and cost concerns often mean that these spaces are under-developed or left out of new prisons entirely. This paper offers practical and research-based solutions to improve wellbeing within the corrections environment, supporting the range of professionals responsible for prison design in introducing green spaces into correctional facilities. It introduces the newly published 'Design Principles for Prison Landscapes: Security, Biodiversity and Wellbeing', from the University of Birmingham (UK), which offers case studies and worked examples to help meet security standards whilst also enabling biodiversity aspirations and supporting wellbeing. The paper will introduce the Design Principles and outline the process behind their development, as well as giving ICPA participants details of how to freely access this new resource.
