Virtual Reality to Prevent Reoffending in Matters of Domestic Violence (PID013)

1.45pm – 2.20pm EDT, 22 April 2024 ‐ 35 mins

Room: Ballroom

Parallel Workshop Session

In response to the important number of convictions and repeat offenses involving domestic violence, societal consciousness raising and to the commitments made by the French public service to reduce them, the prison and probation services developed a virtual reality project in 2020, which is now in its second phase of experimentation.

The 12-minute film, shot in 360°, puts the perpetrator of domestic violence in the shoes of the perpetrator, the victim and the child co-victim. The program aims to help inmates and probationers change their perception of their own violence, to encourage them to speak out in collaboration with probation officers and psychologists in the prison's probation service, and to reinforce the probation process. It enables us to work with inmates and probationers on the cycle of violence, the different forms of violence, and to address coercive control and its components. The program is part of the rehabilitation program developed by the prison probation service.
