Ethnocultural offenders, correctional programming, and a mapping of experiences (PID064)

2pm – 2.30pm EDT, 29 March 2023 ‐ 30 mins

Parallel Workshops

Semi-structured interviews with 39 Ethnocultural offenders (i.e. non-White, non-Indigenous federally sentenced persons who want to preserve their cultural identity and related practices) on conditional release are used to explore the utility and relevance of correctional programs and services. Participant experiences are interpreted against the writings of Tommie Shelby and James Baldwin. The results highlight the need for and complexity of delivering, within Canada’s federal prisons, supports that are respectful and relevant.
