Its well demonstrated that the design of correctional environments plays a huge role in the well-being of prisoners, staff, and visitors. However, building new prison infrastructure is expensive and many jurisdictions are grappling with a established estate of prison infrastructure and very limited funding.
However, small design interventions in existing infrastructure can make a difference. On their own, they might only have a minor impact – perhaps only 1% – but if enough of these interventions are implemented over time, they can create opportunities for meaningful change.
Kavan will look at a series of design interventions and modifications, which while seemingly small on their own, can collectively contribute to a more positive and rehabilitative atmosphere within correctional facilities.
