More Than Just Walls: Designing Correctional Environments that Heal, Not Harm (PID072)

1.30pm – 2pm GMT+03:00, 28 October 2025 ‐ 30 mins

Thematic Workshop Sessions

This session examines how environmental psychology can transform correctional design and operations to support rehabilitation, reduce trauma, and promote staff wellbeing. Dr. Deanna Dwenger, drawing from over a decade of leadership in correctional mental health and her current role in justice architecture, will demonstrate how elements such as light, acoustics, spatial layout, access to nature, and sensory stimuli influence emotional regulation, behavior, and resilience. Through the lens of behavioral health and evidence-based practices, she will highlight the critical relationship between the built environment and psychological outcomes for both incarcerated individuals and staff. The session will also explore how thoughtful, therapeutic design can enhance operational safety while fostering more humane, rehabilitative spaces. Ultimately, Dr. Dwenger argues that space is never neutral - it either contributes to harm or becomes a tool for healing.
