Being able to see yourself as a citizen and having an ongoing (productive) role in society is key to successful reintegration from prison back into community. Mandrup (Budds 2017) says if Architects designing prisons hold this view then designing to facilitate citizenship is the model of correctional design to pursue.
Designing ‘normal’ environments is a widely held ideal for the design of modern prison environments with their role in returning functioning citizens to our communities but, what understanding of this is holds relevance and what should it look and be like? This presentation presents and discusses the findings of a lived-experience research project investigating the meaning of citizenship in prison architecture in Australia from 2016 to 2021.
