Efficient, Secure Structural Detention Design in Prisons in Austria – ESDD (PID005)

11am – 11.30am EDT, 25 April 2024 ‐ 30 mins

Room: Meeting Room 10

Parallel Workshops

The objective of the ESDDP project is to take account of "normalisation efforts" in correctional facilities in Austria by developing auditable structural-technical standards based on social, economic and ecological sustainability in order to ensure safety, order and quality of care in prisons. The main research question of this project is what the best possible sustainable and auditable standards in prison design through structural and technical measures could look like in Austria in the future.
The knowledge relevant to establish auditable structural-technical standards is developed based on the status quo of 23 heterogeneous Austrian prisons, international best-practice models, and surveys of system requirements. The different needs of individual occupational groups and detainees regarding work, educational measures, recreational activities, and therapeutic offers as well as physical and mental protective factors are to be considered.
