Transforming Corrections in Erie County, New York (PID090)

11am – 11.30am EDT, 5 September 2024 ‐ 30 mins

Workshop Session

Over the past eight years, Erie County – the second largest metropolitan area in New York state– has begun transforming correctional practices through a community-based change process guided by a racial equity and social justice lens.
Alarmed by the racial disparities in the criminal justice system, key stakeholders in government, the private sector, education, and the advocacy community have worked together to develop a consensus on needed changes to the system.
Moving from strategic planning to implementation, these efforts have led to new rehabilitative programs, community services, and information systems to improve care, coordination, and accountability. Long-term, this consensus now guides a needs assessment study that will determine how Erie County will improve and replace its aging facilities.
