The numbers of women being detained in carceral settings has increased by approximately 60% since the year 2000. It is estimated that greater than 80% of these women will experience mental ill-health. There is a general paucity of research focussed on the experiences of women in prison in the context of prison-based mental health care in the empirical literature. The findings from this national study help to make visible these experiences. This study also identifies social and organisational barriers and enablers for the provision of, and for access to, prison-based mental health services from the perspectives of those both women in prison and prison personnel.
