Me Mahi Tahi Tātou - Let’s work together
This presentation will showcase the findings of a review of the Me Mahi Tahi Tātou programme undertaken in March 2025.
The programme supports gang-affiliates and their whānau in the Bay of Plenty.  The initiative specifically focuses on providing support by mentors with similar lived experiences who have turned their lives around and are now able to support others on their own reintegration and recovery pathway.

Through a tailored reintegration service based in Te Ao Māori the mentors are providing life changing benefits such as supporting participants to address addiction issues, providing help with restoring relationships, finding housing, addressing initial financial needs, supporting health issues through diet and exercise, and finding sustainable occupations.

Mentors and participants speak the same language. The participants that were interviewed discuss how their mentors understand them and understand where they have been. They share that they feel their mentors are acting in their best interests and they don't feel the need to be guarded; instead, they can be open with each other. Mentors build trust with programme participants and establish collaborative relationships. Provider groups also work collaboratively to provide wrap-around and tailored support.

This presentation will take a collaborative approach as well with presenters representing the Department of Corrections and Maketu Health and Social Services. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from inspirational mentor Karl Goldsbury, reformed recidivist offender and ex-meth addict, whose lived experience and dynamic leadership qualities influence positive change in other gang leader’s lives.
