Partnering with Indigenous New Zealanders and a District Health Board to develop a new model of mental health and addictions care for Corrections (PID039)

11.45am – 12.30pm EDT, 25 October 2022 ‐ 45 mins

Parallel Workshops

In 2018 the New Zealand Government announced that a new 600-bed replacement prison would be built, which includes a ‘first of its kind’ mental health and addictions service.

Following this announcement work began, again using a co-design approach with key health and indigenous partners, to co-develop the details of the service. This plan was finalised in March 2022 and outlines the Model of Care that will be implemented along with some key design features that will be developed through the implementation phase. These features will be detailed in the presentation.

The presentation will reflect on some of the challenges and opportunities in setting transformational objectives and elevating Māori expertise and knowledge within a traditional-oriented prison context.
