Perceived Social support is associated with mental well-being and can ‘buffer’ against the impact of adverse life experiences. Trauma experiences are more common in imprisoned men and therefore further investigation of the relationship between social support and trauma is warranted. A cross-sectional survey and interviews with imprisoned men across the Northern Irish Prison service revealed low levels of social support being experienced by older men and those with a history of substance use. Those with experience of crime related trauma reported lower levels of social support than any other type of trauma. Implications for policy and practice will be discussed.
