The Harms of Incarceration :
Globally, the main types of harm which prisons are said to cause are harm to physical and mental health, psychological stress, increased likelihood of recidivism, negative attitudes toward authority as a result of unfair handling of grievances, and problems with families. In Malaysia , incarceration causes harm to :
i. Overcrowding in the Prison Population.
ii. Creating School of Crime Due to Overcrowding.
iii. Lack of Staff (Security & Rehabilitation Officers) .
iv. Lack Of Proper Accommodations.
v. Spreading diseases such as Covid 19, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis and Scabies.
vi. Impairment of Treatment for Substance Abuse
vii. Increased of recidivism.

Rahmat Bin Rani
Director of Simpang Renggam Prison, Malaysia Prison Department
Rahmat Bin Abdul Rani is the Deputy Commissioner on duty at Simpang Renggam Prison Johor. He holds a degree in Psychology and has been in service since 2000, totaling 24 years. Before becoming the Director of Simpang Renggam Prison, he held various positions, including roles in the Professionalism Division (Training Department) and as Deputy Director of International Affairs & Transfers at Malaysia Prison Headquarters. Simpang Renggam Prison is a Moral Rehabilitation Center that accommodates prisoners under the Detention of Dangerous Drugs Act (LLPK) 1985 and the Detention of Emergency Ordinance (KAMJ) 1969.
