Practice Transfer Taskforce (PID145)

4.15pm – 5pm EDT, 24 October 2022 ‐ 45 mins

Parallel Workshops

ICPA has an expressed ambition to influence correctional practice worldwide. One of its key objectives is “To maintain ICPA as an innovative, learning organization, promoting and disseminating good practices”. Knowledge sharing is one avenue for doing this and ICPA’s breadth of activities in sharing knowledge has steadily multiplied and matured with its Annual Conferences, various specialty Conferences and Webinars, a practitioner-oriented scholarly Journal that has been published regularly over the last 7 years, and more. Despite all these efforts, however, we also know that the transfer of knowledge doesn’t always or easily translate into the actual transfer of new practice. There are many examples of exemplary and innovative practice that emerge locally in one prison or community corrections jurisdiction that unfortunately remain only local in their impact.

This Workshop will outline the aims of ICPA’s new Practice Transfer Taskforce (PTTF), outline the approach that has been taken so far to more actively encourage practice transfer, and discuss some of the successes and lessons learned along the way. Realistically, on a yearly basis, we see the possibility of choosing only two or three examples of exciting new practices that have been highlighted during the ICPA Annual Conference. We want to remain flexible in the process for selecting and then promoting these practices. Most importantly, we want to invite the entire ICPA community of corrections professionals to share their ideas and suggestions for how to make this initiative another ICPA achievement.
