Breaking the Cycle of Violence Through Social Integration (PID039)

2.30pm – 3pm EDT, 26 October 2023 ‐ 30 mins

Workshop Session

The purpose of this presentation will be to highlight the efforts made by the Quebec government to tackle rising events of violence in the city of Montreal through a new, specialized unit, the Équipe d’agents d’intégration sociale (Social Integration Unit - SIU). This unit was created by Le Sous-ministériat des Services correctionnels in June 2022. Beyond repression, this new specialized team is crucial in the fight against crime in Quebec and allows upstream intervention with people in situations of vulnerability or social breakdown, at risk of delinquency or of becoming anchored in a criminal lifestyle.

The SIU’s focus is to provide a social safety net by integrating a multilayered approach to assess and understand the individual’s underlying vulnerabilities and delinquency cycle. As a result, the SIU is involved upon the individual’s admission to prison and tailored assistance and accompaniment is offered to the inmate. This also facilitates and promotes continuity of services after the detention period.
