Plenary Session

This plenary session explores how a strong partnership between the Northern Ireland Prison Service, North West Regional College, and the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust has helped make Magilligan a leading example of rehabilitation in practice. Grounded in trust, humanity, and shared purpose, the partnership focuses on restoring confidence, self-worth, and hope among people in custody. Recognising that many individuals arrive with experiences of trauma, disadvantage, and low self-esteem, the approach seeks to challenge learned helplessness and create opportunities for positive change. Through leadership, collaboration, empathy, and meaningful engagement, Magilligan demonstrates how culture can transform outcomes and support rehabilitation.
