A Decade of Redevelopment – How Clear Vision and Strong Design Objectives Were Achieved in 4 SA Corrections Projects (PID078)

3.30pm – 4pm EDT, 24 October 2023 ‐ 30 mins

Workshop Session

This presentation provides two different perspectives on the 10 year Redevelopment Program undertaken by the South Australian Department for Correctional Services in their men's and women's secure facilities. It explores how a strong vision and clear design principles carried through all four projects over an extended period of time. Innovative design coupled with bold objectives has resulted in four unique projects that all contain relevant and quality examples of modern secure facility design. A focus on normalisation and privacy, choice and agency, and therapeutic and healing environments has created facilities that have already seen positive benefits to both residents and staff.

Sarah Paddick will provide an architects insight into the inception, design and delivery of the projects, and Darian Shephard-Bayly (SADCS) will give his perspective from an executive and operational position.
