The Irish Prison Service (IPS) has developed a comprehensive staff focused approach to workplace safety and resilience, integrating policy, people-centered initiatives, and practical interventions. Through the Employee Assistance Programme, peer support networks, and psychological safety measures, IPS ensures accessible mental health support. The Critical Incident Stress Management model enhances emotional preparedness and recovery. Initiatives like the Amber Flag and structured wellbeing training promote a positive workplace culture. Cross-departmental collaboration embeds resilience into operations, while new educational pathways professionalize staff support roles. By prioritizing staff wellbeing, IPS sets a progressive standard for correctional systems worldwide, fostering a sustainable and effective workforce.
