“Humanity is important in prison... it starts with staff”: Lessons Learned from a U.S. Culture Change Training Program (PID040)

9am – 9.45am EDT, 26 October 2023 ‐ 45 mins

Plenary Session

This presentation will describe the impact of an introductory culture change training that introduces international best correctional practices (e.g. dynamic security, normalization) on knowledge, attitudes, and practice change intentions among prison staff from a U.S. state. Amend at UCSF is a public-health focused prison reform program that works with U.S. correctional agencies to transform prison environments by training staff to change practices and policies. Amend’s introductory trainings aim to establish foundational knowledge to advance staff-led change initiatives and link these changes to improving the health and well-being of prison staff and incarcerated individuals alike. This study presents a descriptive analysis of post-training surveys administered to staff at three prisons in a U.S. state who participated in an introductory training between April 2022 and April 2023.
