An overview of the research evidence investigating links between mental health conditions and reoffending risk will be provided. There will be a discussion on the new science of risk assessment, which is based on transparent, scalable and evidence-based tools that provide probability scores and well calibrated models, and summarize recent trials and other high quality research that examines psychological and pharmacological therapies to reduce reoffending risk.
My research focuses on the relationship between mental illness and violent crime, the mental health of prisoners, and violence risk assessment. More recently, I have been investigating how to prevent violence perpetration and suicide in individuals with mental illness. This is funded by the Wellcome Trust as part of a Senior Research Fellowship in Clinical Science.
