First Nations peoples are vastly overrepresented in prisons in both Australia and Canada, often experiencing substance use disorders linked to intergenerational trauma caused by colonisation and child removal policies. This qualitative study explored culturally grounded post-prison support services in Toronto and Central Coast/Sydney through interviews with First Nations men and staff. Participants described how cultural connection, peer support, and safe residential environments supported healing, strengthened identity, and increased confidence after prison. Access to ongoing community-led support helped men address substance use, housing instability, and reoffending risks. The findings emphasise the value of culturally safe reintegration programs for First Nations peoples leaving prison.
