Steve Pitts

Steve Pitts began his career as a Probation Officer in London before moving to management and national roles including the Probation Service’s work to develop evidence-based practice including through partnerships and in prisoner (re)integration. Following a period with the European Commission as an advisor on probation development, he led the England and Wales Prisons and Probation Service’s international research and justice assistance programmes, working with Governments and international bodies worldwide to support prisons and probation development. He now works independently and with governments, international organisations including UNODC and Council of Europe, and civil society organisations, supporting community-based justice reform and capacity building in most regions of the world.
He has recently completed extensive research with Leo Tigges into good practices in building effective probation/community corrections provision. He contributes to several international initiatives and networks to promote just and effective alternatives to imprisonment, including the International Corrections and Prisons Association (ICPA), the Probation and Parole World Congress Advisory Group, Penal Reform International (PRI), and Netherlands Helsinki Committee. He is an Ambassador for, and Honorary Member of, the Confederation of European Probation (CEP).
