The paper will discuss the role Yvonne Jewkes played in the design of the new Limerick women’s prison in Ireland, which officially opened in October 2023. Yvonne persuaded the Irish Prison Service to hold a design competition with no template to work to. The architects had free rein to come up with whatever they wanted. She made several presentations to them, drawing on the findings of two decades' research on prisons and custodial design. In this session, Yvonne shares the story of the design of Limerick, how her research underpins the ethos behind it, and what the finished building is like. She will also talk honestly about the moral and ethical dimensions of her work, and will discuss how she tread a careful path between wanting to contribute to the better design of prisons, while being cognisant of the need to reduce prison populations and find alternatives to custody, especially for women.
