Process of Desistance and Reintegration: A Longitudinal Study on Parolees and Desistance from Crime (PID029)

9.30am – 10am BST, 15 May 2025 ‐ 30 mins

Parallel Workshops

The Institute for Criminology and Social Prevention has undertaken a research project supported by the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic, aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of interventions for clients of the Probation and Mediation Service following conditional release from prison with supervision. The study further seeks to improve institutional treatment of incarcerated individuals, promote desistance from crime, and facilitate the successful reintegration of offenders into society.

Employing a prospective longitudinal design, the research tracks a cohort of 410 parolees through three waves of data collection between 2021 and 2023—at approximately 3-, 9-, and 18-months post-release. The presentation uses panel analysis which aims to provide empirical insights into the factors influencing desistance from crime. We examined both the factors of desistance, which are referred to by current theories as the most important, and various aspects of client-probation officer cooperation.
