Using Data in a Data Hostile Environment (PID054)

1.45pm – 2.20pm EDT, 22 April 2024 ‐ 35 mins

Room: Meeting Room 9

Parallel Workshop Session

This session focuses on the importance of data in the administration, rehabilitation, and support of offenders. Data can provide valuable insights into offender behavior, program effectiveness, and other key factors that allow correctional organizations to make informed decisions. However, data also faces significant challenges in a correctional setting. These challenges include data quality, data security, and data privacy. To fully realize the benefits of data, correctional organizations must be able to overcome the risks and challenges of holistic data use. There are several advanced technologies that suggest pathways to the uniform use of data while prioritizing data security and privacy. These techniques include homomorphic encryption, distributed learning within neural networks, blockchain technology, and secure computing techniques. Despite these challenges, the benefits of data in the administration, rehabilitation, and support of offenders cannot be overstated.
