Rudy Van De Voorde
Director General, Belgian Prison Service, Belgium
Rudy Van De Voorde was appointed Director General of the Belgian Prison Service in October 2018.
After obtaining a Master in Criminology, he started his career in the psychiatric care sector before making the switch to corrections. He started his penitentiary career as deputy director in the prison in Saint-Gilles (Brussels), launching several innovative initiatives in terms of staff organisation, staff management and regime development.
He then served as assessor in the Brussels Commission for Conditional Release, before heading the HR department of the Belgian Prison Service for six years. During that time, he also contributed to reforms of the federal public function within the Ministry of Justice.
After taking on assignments as director in the prison in Forest (Brussels) and the closed centre for minors in Everberg, he became head of the prison in Dendermonde.
He then was in charge of implementing new penitentiary security procedures and was head of the department responsible for the monitoring of the first generation of prisons under a public-private partnership framework.
Before being appointed Director General of the Belgian Prison Service, he worked as an advisor at the Minister’s Office, where the development of a draft law to improve the penitentiary environment and to introduce a minimum service in prison was among his core tasks.
