Outbreak Management at the Correctional Service of Canada (PID019)

11.30am – 12pm EDT, 26 October 2022 ‐ 30 mins

Parallel Workshops

A significant element that the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) had to coordinate was the management of incarcerated individuals in case of an outbreak, notably by creating isolation zones for positive cases and for contacts at high risk of transmission. This population management strategy, when deployed as soon as we get a COVID-19 positive result for an inmate, allowed CSC to limit the transmission of the virus to a unit, a range or a cohort, preventing the outbreak to spread in the entire institution.
The purpose of this presentation is to share the practices that were implemented with respect to Infection Prevention and Control measures in a correctional environment. Among the measures retained for the future, we can mention education (for both staff and inmates) on basic infection prevention measures, prompt management of populations (high risk of transmission or outbreak situations) and strategic vision for infrastructure improvement applicable in secluded living environment.
