Building on decades of experience in many countries around the world, the International Committee of the Red Cross has developed a unique expertise in visiting prison facilities and improving their conditions.
Although significant differences can be observed in prison systems across Africa, national authorities are most often faced with the challenge of infrastructure that does not meet the needs and objectives of the prison system.
To complement the collaboration at national level, the ICRC organizes workshops with prison authorities from 30 English and French speaking African countries (Dakar in 2017, Addis Ababa 2018, Tunis in 2019, Kigali 2020, Kenya and Abidjan planned for June and November 2022), focusing on prison infrastructure. This session will emphasize on what can be done to improve operation and maintenance.
