The aim of this presentation is to showcase the strong and productive partnership between the Northern Ireland Prison Service (NIPS) and North West Regional College (NWRC), highlighting how collaborative working has enhanced learning, skills development, and purposeful activity within HMP Magilligan.
The session will provide an overview of the diverse opportunities available to individuals in custody, demonstrating their role in supporting personal growth, rehabilitation, and preparation for release. It will also illustrate how this partnership contributes to the Healthy Prison Tests of Leadership, including staff development and support, Purposeful Activity, Safety, Preparing for Release, and Respect, helping to create a positive, inclusive, and rehabilitative prison environment

Colin Rice (Northern Ireland Prison Service) and John Graham (North West Regional College) have been working in partnership since mid-2021 to drive continuous improvement in learning and skills provision, as well as the wider purposeful activity programme, within HMP Magilligan. Through a collaborative and innovative approach, they have strengthened educational opportunities, enhanced engagement, and supported individuals in developing skills that improve employability and personal growth.
