The ensemble was founded in 1991 in order to ensure that Classical Turkish Music, which is one of Turkish most important cultural values, especially Sufi Music and Mehter Music genres are presented and promoted by remaining faithful to their unique style and performance characteristics, and to conduct research and studies in this field, and started to work in two main units as Sufi and Mehter departments. With the awareness of promoting, keeping alive and researching the musical culture; since its establishment, it has given hundreds of concerts in almost all cities of our country and in nearly forty countries abroad. Likewise, the ensemble, which has been endeavoring to record the researches it has done for its concert repertoire in accordance with the motto "words fly and writing remains" to the extent of its possibilities, has so far recorded 14 albums consisting of 26 CDs and three DVDs in the Mevlevi Rites and Surre Procession projects, and has performed and recorded the classical, Sufi and mehter music works in the fields of religious, religious and military music of our musical culture.
In addition to these performances, the Istanbul Historical Turkish Music Ensemble has also undertaken various projects.
