Bridging the Gap: The voices and experiences of men in open prisons in England and Wales and their transition towards release (PID104)

4.37pm – 5pm BST, 14 May 2025 ‐ 23 mins

Parallel Workshops

The session will present the research findings from a qualitative study grounded in the voices and lived experiences of men in five open prisons in England.  Their views and experiences offer invaluable insights into the opportunities and challenges they face at a critical transition period in their sentence. Men’s accounts indicate reaching open conditions is a critical turning point for them in moving forward and feeling hopeful for the future.  The research findings shed much-needed light on the unique role of open prisons and their ongoing efforts to support safe and effective transitions for those in open custodial conditions and how they can effectively bridge the gap between custody and community.
