Presenting the findings from his Churchill Fellowship which involved visiting prisons across Scandinavia and Europe, architect, Alex Newman will draw upon and summerise the best of what he saw. Prisons visited include Halden Prison Norway, Holmsheidi Prison Iceland, and Anstalten Prison in Nuuk, Greenland.
Quality of space and environment with its impact on creating a therapeutic environment will be focussed upon. Along with a review of biophilic design principals, access to natural light and good acoustics the discussion will centre around the importance of good volumetric design.
The quality and environment created by a well-proportioned space or by contrast the immediate human reaction to a bad one and how this relates to trauma-informed design principals will be explored referencing facilities inspected and other examples in Australia.
The presentation will summarise his Churchill report including key recommendations which could be considered at a design and operational level.
