Uniting Form and Function to Optimize Maternal and Child Development Within a Prison Nursery Setting

Jack Turman, Jr., Ph.D. is dedicated to growing education, research and outreach programs that optimize maternal and child health outcomes. He is a Professor in the Dept. of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health, Indiana University, Indianapolis, and in the Dept. of Pediatrics at the IU School of Medicine. He works across Indiana and the USA to develop maternal and child health programs focused on community development and systems change. He actively advocates for policy changes to remove inequitable social systems that underlie poor birth outcomes. He developed and directs the Grassroots Maternal and Child Health Initiative at the Indiana University Fairbanks School of Public Health. This initiative works to build the capacity of individuals and organizations in marginalized communities to bring about systems change that improve pregnancy and infant health outcomes. An outgrowth of this effort is the Mothers on the Rise Initiative. Mothers on the Rise was created in partnership with the Translational Healthcare Team at the Indiana Dept. of Correction, along with a woman who delivered a child in the nursery unit of the Indiana Women’s Prison. This collaborative partnership resulted in the development and implementation of: an individualized, coordinated system of care for each mother/baby pair transitioning from the nursery unit to her home community, a quality of life curriculum that supports community integration, and medical roadmaps that help women navigate complex health systems within the community, while advocating for their health equity. Collaboratively, we are implementing evidence based infant education and development assessment programming within the nursery unit to optimize infant developmental outcomes and reduce educational disparities for children born to mothers within the justice system.

Sarah Paddick

Senior Associate Architecture, Grieve Gillett Architects, Australia

Trained in Architecture at the University of Adelaide, Sarah was a director in her own Architecture and Interior Design practice from 1994 to 2023 when she accepted a Senior Associate role with Grieve Gillett Architects as part of a merger. She now leads GGA’s social Justice sector. Her main area of expertise is in Secure Facility Architecture, undertaking over 100 projects in secure facilities in South Australia. In 2010 she undertook a worldwide tour of Women’s Secure Facilities in her role as the Catherine Helen Spence Memorial Scholar, focusing on residential parenting programs. She has worked as a consultant to the South Australian Department for Correctional Services as a design advisor on their major redevelopment programs at the Yatala Labour Prison and Adelaide Women’s Prison and was a member of the Stronger Foundations and Clear Pathways Women’s Ministerial Work Group.

Sarah is one of the founding directors of the UTurn Foundation, a not-for-profit social initiative focusing on improving outcomes for incarcerated women on their release from prison, by creating employment pathways into the construction industry. She was part of the team that developed the very successful UTurn Construction Pathways Program at the Adelaide Women’s Prison, a unique program that gave incarcerated women work experience and training on a live construction site within the prison. In 2023 Sarah received an Australia Day Award, the Inspiring South Australian Woman’s Award, for her work in the social justice sector.
Sarah is passionate about improving conditions for incarcerated women, and focusing on their specific needs to gain better outcomes.
