Call to Action - Solidarity Appeal to Raise $50,000

Plea for Support as Prisons Burn - Correctional and Healthcare Staff in Haiti Need Your Help

Your humanitarian support is urgently needed to help our correctional and healthcare colleagues in Haiti who are facing extreme risks and challenges  while working to maintain the safety, security, health, and well-being of people in the prisons in Haiti. With no functional government, prolific gang violence, and outages of food, power, and fuel, staff in the Haitian correctional system strive to deliver essential services while caring for themselves and their families.

On March 2, 2024, two of the largest prisons near the capitol city of Port-au-Prince were attacked by gangs, emptied of thousands of persons incarcerated, and set afire. Gang violence has also forced the closure of the sea and airports and driven up food and fuel prices on the black market to record highs. While security forces attempt to stabilize areas, support for the staff and residents of the remaining prisons is urgent and necessary.  Correctional officers continue to provide security at prison locations and staff from Health through Walls (HtW), an NGO working to support health system in Haitian prisons continue to assist with meeting medical needs of those incarcerated.

We are raising funds through this ‘solidarity appeal’, for individual staff members so that they can meet their own and their family’s needs while continuing the essential work in prisons.  If we act now, together we can support our staff, uphold the rule of law, and prevent unnecessary deaths in custody. The situation is critical. There are hundreds of staff who urgently need your help.
