The first global Women in Corrections Conference (WICC) will be held from 19 to 21 February 2025, in Bangkok, Thailand. This event celebrates the 15th Anniversary of the United Nations Rules for the Treatment of Women Prisoners and Non-custodial Measures for Women Offenders, known as the Bangkok Rules, and looks to the future for women impacted by correctional systems worldwide. ICPA is excited to deliver this conference in partnership with hosts, the Thailand Institute of Justice. Both ICPA and TIJ encourage all interested attendees to save the date ahead of next year’s conference with more information, including tickets, accommodation, and programme detail, to come.

Correctional facilities house some of society’s most vulnerable individuals, who are at heightened risk for infectious disease outbreaks. The unique environment in prisons, characterized by overcrowding and limited access to healthcare, amplifies the potential for rapid transmission. Despite these challenges, the role of prison health staff and security personnel in disease containment and prevention often goes unnoticed. Their efforts are crucial not only for safeguarding the health of inmates but also for maintaining broader public health security. Monkeypox is a viral zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus. It is similar to smallpox but generally less severe; transmission can occur through direct contact with bodily fluids, respiratory droplets, or contaminated materials. While previously confined to certain regions of Africa, recent outbreaks in non-endemic countries have heightened global awareness of the disease and its potential to spread, particularly in vulnerable environments.

Prison staff work in highly complex settings, and with society’s most vulnerable and injured people. Unfortunately – and despite their central role in day-to-day prison life - prison officers are an occupational group whose skills and commitment have so often been underrated and unnoticed. In various ways, prison officers’ contribution to making ex-prisoners less likely to commit crimes is constantly undermined. This is a sad state of affairs, since the uniformed prison officer is often the only positive role-model a prisoner sees. Professionalization is directly related to the quality of staff morale, recruitment and retention of the ‘right’ staff.
