Article 11: Advancing Artificial Intelligence Technology to Improve Health Outcomes in Prisons of Low-Income Countries (ACJ16-A011)
Abstract
As per the conclusions of the World Health Organization (WHO, 2021), technology is one of the essential components in building a health system framework, which can be applied directly in places of detention. Health system strengthening within prisons necessarily includes technology, yet in low-resource countries, investments in technology are seldom prioritized. This paper outlines how the implementation of computer-assisted artificial intelligence that has successfully transformed the process of tuberculosis detection and treatment within prisons of Haiti, one of the poorest nations in the world. We conclude that the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in prisons is still in its early stages, but there is considerable potential for this technology to improve health outcomes for people in places of detention. As AI continues to develop, it is likely to play an increasingly important role in healthcare in prisons, especially in low-income countries.
