His Majesty’s Prison Job Vacancy: Prison Officer

The Government of Montserrat is inviting applications from suitably qualified persons to fill the post of Prison Officer, His Majesty’s Prison.

The successful applicant will be required to work on a Shift Rota system including weekends and public holidays.
 
JOB PURPOSE
To ensure the security, control and rehabilitation of all prisoners in accordance with the Prison Ordinance and supporting Regulations.
 
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful applicant will:  
 
• Maintain safe custody of prisoners
• Carry out security checks and searching procedures as instructed by the Superintendent of Prisons
• Supervise prisoners on work assignments, visits, meal times, prison programmes and recreation
• Keep account of prisoners and maintain order
• Employ authorized physical control and restraint procedures where appropriate
• Adhere to and reinforce the security of the prison
• Take care of prisoners and their property, taking account of their rights and dignity
• Provide appropriate care and support for prisoners at risk of self-harm
• Take an active part in rehabilitation programmes for prisoners
• Assess and advise prisoners, based on your training drawing on your own experiences
• Maintain records on all prisoners, write fair and perceptive reports on prisoners
• Record accurate entries in prison diaries
• Promote and adhere to all Prison Rules and Regulations
• Carry out any other duty as provided for under the Prison Ordinance and supporting regulations
 
 
PERSONNEL SPECIFICATIONS
The applicant should: -
• Have received a Certificate of completion of Secondary School Education OR gained three (3) or more subject passes at O’ Level CXC or GCE. 
• Have three (3) years’ experience working in a security field
• Not have any criminal convictions in this jurisdiction or elsewhere
• Have the ability to give instructions to prisoners
• Be able to build appropriate partnerships and relationships, which will assist in prisoner’s rehabilitation and reduced recidivism
• Be able to work and cope within the environments of a Prison Institution or Correctional facility
• Be physically fit
• Have a keen interest in self-development
• Be able to work as a team member
• Have excellent written and oral communication skills
• Possess a valid driver’s license and the ability to operate a manual transmission vehicle would be an asset
• Have the ability to demonstrate a high level of integrity, confidence, courage, and discipline
 
 
TERMS OF ENGAGEMENT
Successful applicants would be expected to undergo a physical fitness test, the Prison Officer Entry Level Training and other entry requirements. Other appropriate training and uniform will be provided.
 
BASIC SALARY
R31- R26: XCD $38,556.00 - $46,128.00 / Year
