Silke Marynissen is a PhD fellow fundamental research at the research group PArticipation and Learning in Detention (PALD) of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium) and at the Research Foundation of Flanders (FWO). Silke has a background in Adult Educational Sciences and started her PhD titled ‘When words fail, music speaks: Understanding the processes and outcomes of participatory music programs in prison’ in November 2021, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Dorien Brosens (research group PArticipation and Learning in Detention (PALD), Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium) and Prof. Dr. Geert Vandermeersche (Brussels research centre on Innovation in Learning & Diversity (BILD), Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium). Within this PhD research, Silke uses the perspective of realist science and aims to provide an answer to the question why, how, for whom and under which circumstances participatory music programs in prison work?
Currently, as a researcher in the second year of her PhD, Silke already published in peer-reviewed journals such as an article in Panopticon (Dutch journal) and an abstract in Forensic Science International: Mind & Law. Furthermore, she presented at several international conferences, such as the 4th research seminar of the Social Impact of Music Making (SIMM) on music in detention (December 2021), the prison working group of the European Society of Criminology (ESC, April 2022), and the 18th international conference of the European Prison Education Association (EPEA, June 2023). In addition, Silke is a member of Klasbak vzw (the EPEA branch of Flanders) and the International Music, Abolition, and Justice Inquiry Network (IMAJIN).

Dorien Brosens

Assistant professor, Postdoctoral researcher, Department of Educational Sciences, Research group PArticipation And Learning in Detention (PALD), Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium

Dorien Brosens is an assistant professor (10%) at the Department of Educational Sciences of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and a senior postdoctoral researcher (90%) at the Research Foundation of Flanders (Belgium). She is one of the founding members of the interdisciplinary research group called “PArticipation and Learning in Detention” (PALD). Her research mainly focuses on peer programs, active citizenship, and innovative types of learning in prison, encompassing formal, non-formal and informal learning activities. She has published in journals such as the Journal of Prison Education and Reentry, the European Journal of Criminology, and Criminology & Criminal Justice.
