Dr Rohan Lulham is a Senior Lecturer in Design at the University of Sydney, and his research focuses on the transformative potential of design in promoting social justice and growth, with a specific emphasis on the criminal justice system. Drawing on his background in psychology and architecture, as well as his experience working as a psychologist in youth justice, Rohan's research frequently intersects across design, criminology, and psychology, with affect being a central construct.
A significant aspect of his research involves the production of new knowledge through practice-led design research projects. Over the last decade, Rohan has led numerous large design research collaborations, including investigations into prison education, prison industries, community legal services, appearing in court via video links from custody, therapeutic youth justice units, acute mental health units, and R&D strategies for digital technology access for prisoners.
In advocating for alternative approaches to criminal justice, Rohan emphasizes the role of inclusive and participatory design in creating impact and building pathways towards more humane and productive justice systems.
