In Memory of Peter Severin, ICPA President
________________________________________
Peter, who had retired as Commissioner for Correctional Services in New South Wales in 2021 after nearly a decade of service, had dedicated his entire professional life to advancing prison and correctional services both in Australia and internationally.
Peter Severin's remarkable career in corrections began in Germany before he relocated to Australia, where he made significant contributions to the field. During his tenure as Commissioner in New South Wales from 2012 to 2021, he oversaw several landmark initiatives, including the implementation of smoke-free policies across the prison system, the management of Australia's largest prison building programme, and the development of an effective COVID-19 response strategy within correctional facilities. Following his retirement from public service, Peter continued his commitment to correctional reform through his role as President of the ICPA, where he worked to promote best practices in corrections globally.
A Vision of Humanity and Rehabilitation
Colleagues remember Peter for his fundamental belief in human dignity and rehabilitation. His approach to corrections was guided by the conviction that every individual has inherent value and the capacity for positive change. This philosophy informed his leadership style and the reforms he championed throughout his career.
"At his core was a belief in the inherent value of every human being and a belief in a person's ability to change," noted a statement from the ICPA Board. "Peter's legacy of humanity, professionalism, and forward-thinking leadership will continue to inspire correctional professionals around the world for generations to come."
International Impact
As President of the ICPA, Peter worked to build international cooperation in the field of corrections. His colleagues describe him as "a true influencer" who was "always committed to a better future for correctional services – for both staff and inmates alike."
His international engagement opened new perspectives for many in the corrections field, and his voluntary work with the ICPA reflected his dedication to improving prison conditions and rehabilitation outcomes worldwide.
